1850 Army Staff and Field Officers The sword was worn by all members of staff units, artillery and infantry field officers, light artillery field officers, staff officers and auxiliaries between 1850 and 1872.
Although other
swords were permitted by regulation, this design was the most popular officer's
sword during the American Civil War. During the Antebellum years, many
Confederate officers, including General Robert E. Lee, carried this sword in
Indian campaigns. Although swords were reserved for officers of the rank of
major or above, there was nothing to prevent officers of any rank from owning
swords. The sword of the staff and field officers is different from the sword
of the foot officers of 1850.
